Mobile Termination, Network Externalities, and Consumer Expectations

چکیده

We re-examine the literature on mobile termination in the presence of network externalities. Externalities arise when firms discriminate between onand off-net calls or when subscription demand is elastic. This literature predicts that profit decreases and consumer surplus increases in termination charge in a neighborhood of termination cost. This creates a puzzle since in reality we see regulators worldwide pushing termination rates down while being opposed by network operators. We show that this puzzle is resolved when consumers’ expectations are assumed passive but required to be fulfilled in equilibrium (as defined by Katz and Shapiro, AER 1985), instead of being rationally responsive to non-equilibrium prices, as assumed until now.

Mobile Termination and Consumer Expectations under the Receiver-Pays Regime

We analyze how termination charges affect retail prices when taking into account that receivers derive some utility from a call and when firms may charge consumers for receiving calls. We assume that consumers form expectations about network sizes in a passive, but ex-post rational way. We show that RPP enlarges the set of equilibria compared to CPP. For a given termination charge and inelastic...

Peer Effects and Consumption Behavior in Interconnected Networks

I consider peer effects of network externalities in a competitive telecommunication market. The magnitude of network externalities depends on whether the caller and the receiver are in the same peer group. Technically, interconnection between carriers can eliminate network externalities, but carriers may adopt terminationbased price discrimination to reduce compatibility. When termination-based...

NET Institute*

We examine the e¤ects of mobile termination rate regulation in asymmetric oligopolies. We do this by extending existing models of asymmetric duopoly and symmetric oligopoly where consumer expectations about market shares are passive. We …rst calibrate product di¤erentiation parameters using detailed data from the Spanish market from 2010. Next, we predict equilibrium outcomes and welfare e¤ects...

Price caps on termination charges have led to significant price increases for mobile phone subscribers

T he prices that mobile operators charge other network operators (fixed or mobile) for connecting calls to their subscribers – socalled termination charges – have become a hotly debated issue among regulators and academics worldwide. The level of these charges is perceived to be high both in absolute terms, but also in relation to similar prices charged by fixed network operators. Industry anal...

Rational expectations, optimal control and information technology adoption

The existing economics and IS literature on technology adoption often considers network externalities as one of the main factors that affect adoption decisions. It assumes that potential adopters achieve a certain level of expectations about network externalities when they have to decide whether to adopt a particular technology. However, there has been little discussion on how the potential ado...
